When I’m scheduled to DJ a yoga sculpt class just a few days after the tragic death of Avicii, then it only makes sense to sing more than a few Avicii tracks during the class.

The April 2017 edition of DJ Kanoya spins at Corepower Yoga brings a “stand up” theme. Katie B’s theme for the week was “I stand for myself.” So it only made sense to mix in Ludacris’ “Stand Up,” as well as a “stand” theme song from Bob Sinclair.

It was a heart pumping, sweat inducing Yoga Sculpt session with Katie B at CorePower Yoga in Point Loma. Katie’s theme for the week:“my why is stronger than my excuses.” Think about why you make an excuse for something. And by taking the time to think about it, you generate a better decision and conclusion.

It was an introspective way to start class (hence the reason I led off with what else, Annie Lennox’s “Why.”). But then things picked up and before long everyone was sweating and dancing!

I recently had my first DJ session at Pacific Beach CorePower Yoga. And this inaugural session, during a regularly scheduled yoga class in a yoga studio was special.  

I've DJ'd a handful of yoga sessions, mostly for large crowds in big event venues, but on this night it was unlike any other.

The instructor, Katie Burke, themes her classes each week. Since we were in the shadows of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, Katie themed the week “Love Over Fear.”

Toward the end of the flow, she began to read the names of some of the Pulse nightclub victims. I didn't know she was going to do that and slowly faded out the song that was playing and brought in "No Woman No Cry."

We ended class by joining hands and singing along to Whitney Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love.”

Life brings unscripted moments that turn into magic. And we are lucky to be alive to allow ourselves to be a part of such moments.
