Sunset Yoga Under The Sails - Free Yoga at the San Diego Convention Center

Sunset Yoga Under The Sails took place on August 29, 2018 at the San Diego Convention Center.

On August 29, 2018, nearly 1,000 San Diegans made it out to the San Diego convention center to stretch their bodies at Sunset Yoga Under The Sails. The session, led by Lauren Padula, was a first for the convention center. The free event provided a unique experience in a space typically reserved for trade shows, music performances and other mixed uses.

The San Diego Convention Center's Sails Pavilion transformed into a tranquil, yoga studio for one night during a free, community event. In collaboration with the Downtown San Diego Partnership, nearly 1,000 yogis of all fitness levels shared mats across the exhibit space floor during the first ever "Sunset Yoga Under the Sails."

A Retreat Without The Travel With Goldie Graham - Starlight La Jolla

San Diego based yoga and fitness DJ, Justin Kanoya, and yoga teacher, Goldie Graham.

After a couple of missed attempts, I finally had the opportunity to DJ an event with yoga teacher extraordinaire, Goldie Graham.

Goldie, who teaches yoga in San Diego, routinely hosts multi-day yoga retreats in different areas of the country (and the world). But on this day, she put together a one-day retreat at a quaint venue in La Jolla. She called it a “retreat without the travel.”

It took place at the Starlight La Jolla, a perfect the spot for a perfect afternoon to flow and then enjoy tasty treats and then a couple of hours in and around the pool.

Fitbit Local San Diego Celebrates Two Year Anniversary - Bird’s Surf Shed Yoga

Fitbit Local San Diego celebrates two years with a yoga session at Bird’s Surf Shed.

Two years ago, Fitbit Local started, not only in San Diego, but nationwide. San Diego was the first city to launch the program, with the purpose of bringing local communities together in the name of fitness. It’s now in several other cities, but my heart always remains in San Diego. In November 2015, I was part of that first event with Fitbit Local ambassadors, Sheri Matthews and Mike Sherbakov. And so much has happened since then to all of us.

Mike and Sheri wanted to do something special to celebrate this two-year milestone. They decided to make it a yoga only meet-up and found one of the coolest and “so San Diego” spots to do it at, Bird’s Surf Shed.

Bird’s, a venue that is actually in a shed, that just happens to be one of the biggest surf shops in San Diego. When I heard that’s where it was happening, a spot where I DJ’d a yoga event in the past, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

Our band of three was back together again for what would be an amazing night of yoga and music. There was something special about this night. It’s hard to explain, but there was magic happening.

Perhaps it’s because many of these large yoga events (this one had 150 people attending) are usually in spaces that are nearly impossible to have total silence. But we had it here. Add in the mellow beats of the music, as well as some architectural lighting that faded in and out of those beats, people were just transformed into something different during this flow.

DJ Kanoya Restorative Yoga Flow - Live Yoga Music Mix

This is a continuous 60+ minute restorative yoga setlist, originally programmed for the August 22, 2017 Savasana at Sunset taught by Sara Shermis. The first 10 minutes are ambient, useful for a warm-up flow and/or meditation. The pace picks up slightly, with vocal tracks sprinkled in throughout. But the pace is mostly slow, specifically for the restorative nature of the class it was created for.

At 55:27, the music is all ambient for approximately 20 minutes. This gives you a window for both a cool down and savasana.

Tuesday Night Savasana at Sunset with Sara Shermis

Sara Shermis leads a yoga class at La Valencia hotel in La Jolla, Calif. 

Lululemon La Jolla’s Tuesday night yoga sessions continued throughout the summer, and I had a chance to squeeze in another DJ session. The event, Savasana at Sunset, is a benefit to OG Yoga, an organization that brings the practice of yoga to those that may not otherwise be exposed to it, including underprivileged youth, battered women and even prison inmates.

For the August 22 session, I was introduced to San Diego yoga instructor, Sara Shermis, who I had the pleasure of DJing alongside for the first time.
